Worms Collecting at the Top of Bin, Not in Food

by Tom
(Albion, CA USA)

I've been using a plastic 3-level bin system for 3 years. Now I see few worms in the food source and lots collecting around to top edges of the top bin, as if they wanted to escape.

What does that indicate? What should I do about it?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Worms at the Top
by: Helen

I have been Worm Farming for A lot of years & still there are times when I open the lids & they are trying to "leave Home" for greener pastures.

I was told in the beginning they would do this for two reasons. One, that they are hungry, not enough food available & two, that the bedding is either too wet,too dry or too acidic.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Helen for your advice.

I will will chime in a little later in the week Tom if you can hold out a bit.

Helen makes a great point. Check your temps, moisture, acidity, and air flow.

All the best,

worms collecting at top of bin
by: Patricia Holman

I have a 5-tray set-up in my bathroom, and leave the light on at night to encourage them to stay in the bins.

Have you checked the food to see how many worms you have there feeding?

I use moistened shredded newspaper on top of the food, to give the worms a place to rest when they are not eating.

The newspaper does eventually get composted as well, so I keep a bag of shredded paper handy.
