Coco Coir

What is Coir?
coco coir is an absolutely wonderful bedding for worms and growing medium for plants. It is also known as coconut coir, coco husks or coco fibers. It is the stiff coarse fibers from the outer husk of a coconut. It lies between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut. When ground down, it looks a lot like peat moss.

  • Coco coir has an aeration of about 30% allowing water to run off well while also retaining moisture in its fibers
  • Holds up to 10 times it weight in water and expands up to 5 times its size
  • It is an inert material lasting a long time
  • It protects the plant root system in times of heat
  • promotes healthy and vigorous root system
  • Replaces rockwool and perlite. Perlite adds no nutritional value to the soil.
  • Coir is free of weeds and pathogens and resists bacterial mold and fungal growth naturally

Coir is not an all purpose growing medium and should be mixed with a calcium substance and worm castings or your favorite compost. Your best growth medium is the one you come up with. However, this is a worm farming site and I recommend you always use 25-33 percent worm castings in your growth medium mix. Worms are the master soil builders. Learn about worm castings usage here.

Soak the brick in water for 10 min. Do not use water from water softeners as it contains salts. After coir brick has expanded give it a rinse to eliminate some natural salts that may have occurred  from tropical ocean regions.
