Do you have to have a contractors license of any kind to start this type of business?

Hi Aaron,

No, not typically. Property preservation can be categorized as janitorial, lawn care, etc.

This also depends on the many services you'll be performing. Some services like plumbing and HVAC will, of course, need to be performed by licensed contractors in which you can sub out.

The best thing to do is to go down to your city hall and tell them what you're doing (Just cleaning out the homes and getting them ready to be listed) and they should issue you some type of letter that says you meet all of their licensing requirements.

If you need a permit to operate out of your city then take care of that when you're there.

I live in a small town and it's all I needed. I paid nothing and they wrote of a letter for me, but every city is different.

Thanks for the question Aaron,
~Pauly
